slow roll into January

Happy new year friends!  Yes, I may be over half a month behind, but like the title of this post, I slow rolled into January.  Like many, I'm sure, I started out with great intentions (as I always do) and then time seemed to speed up and I was moving like molasses.  In January.

But here I am, moving at a more human pace trying to get myself where I want to be.

And where is that?

Well, thank you for asking and giving me such a good segue into my topic for today's post.......

Goals, friends.  Goals.

I have two sets of goals this year.

House goals and me goals

I've collected and organized them in this little book (that was in a pile of little books I have collected from the dollar bins at Michael's over the years.....)

Let's dive in.

House Goals

You may be shaking your head and thinking that we just built our house, how can there be anything else left to do?  Let me just say, that when we were in the building/dreaming process, I had this crazy notion that it was going to be all done and perfect when we moved in.

Right.

I think you have to live somewhere a while before you really get the space- what you need it to do, how you use it, what it feels like at different times of the day.  What you get, whenever you move into a house is just that- a house.  You make it a home.  And home wasn't built in a day.  And neither was Rome, I hear.

We've been here since late July, and are getting a good feel for the spaces and are ready to do some of the things.

Like......

The entry.  We need some colour or something interesting going on in here.  It's too boring for us.  I want to paint the back of the door, and do something with the office door (which I do not like)

The dining area.  I want to do something with this back wall.  I don't like the break between the subway tile and the wall.  I have ideas- but I'm not sure if Tim is going to bite.

The garage door.  It needs paint.  BAD.  It looks terrible.

The mud area.  This is just an explosion of stuff.  We fall all over each other going out and coming in.  This area needs to work a whole lot better than it does.

Does the crate of mitts and toques say we live in Canada?  No?  How about the TWO BASKETS MORE in the coat closet.

Which leads me to.... the laundry room.  Gotta do something about it.  I just do not know what.  Maybe just start washing our clothes on rocks at the lake.

The powder room.  It has a kicky floor but that's it.  Very boring.  And my kids have splashed so much water ON THE WALL that it needs to be painted anyways.

The loft.  I have successfully ignored this space since July.

Outside.  Landscaping, kid stuff, deck or deck substitute.

And then just odds and ends like organization, stuff on walls, a little paint.

I know right now that we will NEVER get all that done this year.  Good grief, we won't get all that stuff done next year either, but it's good to have a plan of what you want to accomplish and tick stuff off as you go.

Me Goals
(this is wordy- you've been warned)

I'm turning 40 this November and my kids are getting older and don't need me as much.  I was inspired by Emily of Jones Design Co and her 40 by 40 list.

I do not have a list of 40, I'm not an adventure type gal and I don't like heights, clowns or being in small spaces.  So jumping out of an airplane, clown college and escape tricks are not on my list.
It's things that I want to do- for me. Things that I've thought, man, I should totally do that.  And really, why haven't I?

1.  Learn to knit or crochet.

2.  Read 40 books.  I've come close to this in years past- my focus lately has been terrible, so this isn't going to be as easy as it might have been.

3.  Run a race.  I've wanted to do this for a long time.  I started running in 2014 and have done it on and off since.  I am not athletic- never was.  I was close to the last picked in gym, I got hit in the face with the basketball more times than I hit the hoop.  But I can run.  I'm not fast, but I can do it.  I won't win, but just doing it will be an accomplishment for me.

4.  Make good stove top espresso.

5.  Ride my bike to work.  Tim bought me a used cruiser bike last fall.  It's red and it's wanting a basket, I can just tell.  The part of me that wants to be a hipster wants to pedal that baby to work.

6.  Make homemade donuts.  Real donuts people.  Fried, tasty, horrible for you donuts.  I love donuts- good, old fashioned homemade donuts.  And things always taste better when you make them yourself.

7.  Oh this one goes so well with 6- Get in shape.  Yeah, the donut lover.  I had a difficult last half of 2016 and it ran into 2017 and how I dealt with that was with food.  And Netflix.  I'm not where I want to be when I hit 40 and I want my kids to see and learn that exercise and health is important at any age.  But still donuts, so I might have to work a little harder.

8.  Play piano.  When I was a kid, my brother and I took piano lessons.  I wasn't great, but I wasn't terrible.  But we quit and now as an adult, I regret that.  We have my folks' old piano at our house so there's nothing standing in my way.

9.  Paint a wall worthy picture.

10.  Sing karaoke.

11.  Make illustrated cards- with my illustrations.  Back into the arty stuff.  I started doing little sketches and doodles and I love it.  A friend of mine has asked me to make some cards for her, and doggone it, I am going to do it.

12.  Cook a lobster.  Why?  Cause I've never done it and I like me some seafood.

13.  Take better pictures.

14.  Blog once a month- or more.  I like blogging- I don't think it's cool to say that, but I do.  I like writing- I like putting together a story.  I know now that there are a few more people than just my mom reading it (Hi Mom!), but even if there weren't- I like having a space to flex my creative muscle in a different way.

That's my list.  And I'm pretty sure I can check off all these things by November and enjoy the process.  I'll keep you updated on both sets of goals so you can see how I progress- it should be entertaining.  Keep a lookout on Instagram too- I post a whole lot more on there and you can get peaks into life as it's happening.

Until we meet again friends,

Laura
